Josh Edgar was born in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1990. He served as an Infantryman and Sniper on Active Duty in the U.S. Army and the Mississippi National Guard for seven years before moving back to his hometown of Ocean Springs, Mississippi in 2013. He received his Associates Degree, with an emphasis in Fine Arts, from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 2015, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the Mississippi University for Women in 2017.
Edgar's work blurs the distinction between functionality and art, utilizing texture as a main component of his pieces. Taking inspiration from artists such as Janine Antoni, Akira Satake, and Shozo Michikawa, Edgar strives to push the limits of his aesthetic with his ceramic and three-dimensional sculptures. His functional teacups and bowls express a desire to be held and used, while his twisted vessels are created by fusing organization and chaos, revealing the beauty in imperfection. He began exploring more representative sculptures in 2019 in the form of rabbits and hares. Edgar has had his work displayed in the "Woodfireworks II" Exhibition at the Charlie Cummings Gallery, in the gallery of the Mississippi University for Women's Eugenia Summer Gallery and Gallery B, and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Jackson County campus' Fine Arts Gallery. The recipient of several awards, including first place in a state-wide collegiate art competition in 2014 and 2015, and first place overall in the MUW Student Juried Exhibition in 2017. Josh Edgar currently resides in Pilot Point, TX. |
